This Thursday’s Thought

Today’s post is a bit of an off-shoot from yesterday’s blog about starting over, since this idea of renewal and improvement has been on my mind a lot lately.

Take gambles – not to be confused with go gambling, because I can’t in good conscience endorse that. What I mean is: really put yourself out there and see what happens.

January buzzes with radio adverts, magazine articles, and people singing the praises of “a new you for 2013!” What to do, what not to do, and why to do or not do it lays the foundational groundwork for most marketing campaigns. Why do their products sell? Because it’s true: we want to be taller, better, faster, and stronger.

Allow me to step back in time before I start to speculate about the future. This year I will celebrate the one-year anniversary of fleeing routine in favour of adventure; of launching a freelance business that has opened doors I never knew existed; and on deciding to broadcast my written voice out into the e-niverse. I consider myself fortunate that so many of my gambles have offered up a significant pay-out (and I mean that both literally and metaphorically). I feel better, faster, and strong – though certainly not taller – and am fueled to create even better art this year and in years to come. I hope we can all share in our successes (peace, love, and all that other hippie goodness… am I right?!)

On the flip side, I do acknowledge the knowledge implicit in gambling that one might falter or, ultimately, fail. Ask yourself: what’s life without a little excitement?

Well, it sounds like I still managed to unconsciously sanction gambling, so maybe that’s a sign to bring this post to a close… or to book a flight to Vegas to see guilty pleasure Brit Brit live at Caesar’s Palace! (Don’t bother judging me; I’ve already judged myself.)
