Today’s Daily Prompt is quite timely given that Christmas – a holiday full of food – is just around the corner:
Some people eat to live, while others live to eat. What about you? How far would you travel for the best meal of your life?
I don’t know that I always take shelter in one camp or the other, but I’d lean in favour of ‘eat to live’ and here’s why:
Most times we associate the adage ‘eat to live’ with an assumption that food is not something to be relished and enjoyed, but rather a means to an end (survival).
I disagree.
Take a minute to consider how you define ‘living.’ An able mind? A working body? Actively pursuing goals? Surrounding yourself with friends and family?
For me, living is an act of engagement with the world and the people, places, and experiences in it. It just so happens that food is a terrific excuse to socialize and to delve into culture through cuisine. Last night twenty-odd friends of ours came together under our roof to share not only food, but stories and laughter as well. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true: life happens while you’re eating.
As for the second half of the prompt, this afternoon I will hit the highway and drive two hours for the best meal(s) of my life: home-cooked goodness c/o none other than my ma. Bring on the stretchy pants!
Happy holidays!
